NEW: Second call of the DFID-ESRC Joint Scheme for Research on International Development. Phase 2 of the DFID–ESRC joint scheme for research on international development has been announced. The fund supports high-quality development research which provides a more robust conceptual and empirical basis for development and the achievement of the MDGs. As well as research excellence, researchers must identify the potential impacts of their research on policy and practice and actively consider how these will be maximised and developed. Applications for this call are invited for projects with a Full Economic Cost value of between £100,000 and £500,000 (100% FEC).

Deadline for applications: September 30, 2010, 4 pm (UK time)


Call for proposals - Danish Council for Independent Research, Social Sciences

The Danish Council for Independent Research, Social Sciences (FSE) awards
grants to researchers within the social sciences. FSE covers the following main
disciplines: economics, sociology, political science and jurisprudence, as well as
the societal aspects of a number of interdisciplinary areas (e.g. development
studies, gender studies and cultural geography).

The Council invites applications for the following instruments in the Autumn of 2010:
1. Sapere Aude: DFF, Postdoc - Deadline: September 2, 2010
2. Individual postdoctoral grants - Deadline: September 2, 2010
3. Research stays abroad - May be submitted at any time
4. Preparation of international applications (START) - May be submitted at any time


Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development

The Award is a competitive research grant program administered by the Global Development Network (GDN) that identifies and funds research proposals in developing and transition countries with high potential for excellence in research and clear policy implications for addressing development issues.

Application deadline: October 18, 2010


TWAS Fellowships 2010

TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world, is now accepting applications for its postgraduate, postdoctoral, visiting scholars and advanced research fellowship programmes. The fellowships are offered to scientists, generally from the natural sciences, from developing countries and are tenable at centres of excellence in various countries in the South. Female scientists are especially encouraged to apply.

Deadline for applications are country and programme specific.


Global South Scholar-in-Residence Programme - the Graduate Institute, Geneva

The Graduate Institute in Geneva has launched a new academic programme, inviting a small number of scholars from the global South to the Institute for a periode of one semester in order to participate in teaching courses and further personal research projects.

Application deadlines: Each March 31 for the autumn semester; October 31 for the spring semester


Several FP7 calls launched

The European Commission has published a number of calls for proposals under the specific programmes Cooperation and Capacities of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The calls address the following areas:

Cooperation:
- Security;
- Space;
- Health (two calls);
- Environment (including climate change);
- Food, agriculture and fisheries, and biotechnology;
- Energy (three calls);
- Socio-economic sciences and humanities (three calls);
- Biorefinery joint call (two sections), including energy; environment (including climate change); food, agriculture and fisheries, and biotechnology; and nanosciences, nanotechnologies, materials and new production technologies.

Capacities:
- Research for the benefit of SMEs (three calls);
- Activities of international cooperation (four calls);
- Science in society;
- Regions of knowledge.
