Experience sharing workshop: Dried fruits and vegetables enterprise development

Date and venue: November 30 - December 2, 2009, Uganda

Enterprise development in solar drying of fruits and vegetables is not new in Tanzania, where farmers and cooperatives have been involved in drying of fruits and vegetables on a small scale; but they have not successfully established themselves as suppliers for the domestic or international markets. However, in other developing countries in Africa (including Uganda) such industries are flourishing, contributing to the improvement of farmers’ standard of living, while at the same time creating jobs for women and youth and opening possibilities for networking, communication, and mentoring of entrepreneurs.

Thus, staff of the Danida funded “Drying Fruits and Vegetables, and Development of Market for Employment Creation and Poverty Alleviation: Assessing Market Opportunities” pilot project in Tanzania visited successful companies in Uganda to learn and share experiences, and to learn aobut challenges, opportunities, and problems.
